This Local Arizona Band’s Near Death Experience

Coming home from a show in Las Cruces NM on August  29th, The Fair and Debonair‘s back tire on their van exploded. The van jack knifed and went spinning 360 degrees into a cement ditch. Needless to say, the van is no longer among the living, along with alot of Wyatt’s drum equipment. I’m glad to say that TFAD are alive and remain very positive despite this minor set back. They’re having a CD release party on Sept. 25th at the Clubhouse. They also have a few songs posted from their up and coming EP on their MySpace page. The new songs are actually extremely good, I really enjoy a good blend of southern rock and with a dash of hardcore in these songs. So go and check them out.

Solitude Productions is in the process of booking their 3rd metal fest at the Phix on September 19th. The bands that are currently booked are as followed Giants Among Us, Almost Is Nothing (from Oregon), Crowned Forever King and More. I don’t personally know Damien ( the owner and promoter of Solitude Productions), But I had the chance to play a show with him once. what I can tell you based on that experience is that Damien is pretty passionate about our scene and does whatever he can to promote your show.

Fan Funding, the alternative to raising money for your professional recording project

So, you don’t have that record deal or that investor to help front the money needed to record your album. Well don’t sweat it, you always have the next best thing, your fans. Websites like Sell a Band, Artist Share, and Slice the pie make it possible for fans to invest in your project, while your band collects the funds.

A blog post by Bob Baker talks about a band raising $725,000 by pre selling it’s album before it was ever recorded. The blog also lists some other artists that have had success with this fan-funding model.

Oh Lovely

This has been one great week for us at Sky Bison. We’ve been finishing up the Lakes album counting down the days to Superbowl Sunday! Our Arizona Cardinals have brought all kinds of excitement to this beautiful state.

We’ve spent a couple days working out drum sounds for the song “Oh Lovely”. Our inspiration has been that of an early elton john style (for the drums at least).
We removed the bottom heads on the toms and the outer head of the kick drum then tweaked the tuning for a while until we found that sweet spot. we really deadend the snare, then livend it back up until we found it’s sweet spot. With the company of 13′ partially cracked hi hats, a 22′ vintage ride and a 15′ thin cymbal, we found ourselves exactly where we wanted to be for the drum sounds on this song.

We tracked and tracked then Jason said “Okay imagine it’s Nineteen Seventy Something…. you’ve got a big gig playing for Elton John…. get into the mood… feel the vibe.”
So I did just that… I imagined a dark arena with me on this old kit, on a big drum riser… A big spot light on elton playing a black grand piano. I kept my eyes closed and started to have so much fun that I had to occasionally open my eyes… I was afraid I would fall off time I was getting so into it. So anyways… it was a funny thing to do… but afterwards Jason and I just laughed because it was the best take all day!

This album has been a lot of fun for us and I’m sure it will be equally as fun to listen to. Look for it later this year.

We will all be at This Daily Summer’s show this friday, hanging out.
It should be a fun night…
It’s at Modified Arts at 7 PM.
Everyone should come hang with us.
